Handyman Tips and Tricks
A handyman, whether a DIY home owner or someone hired to provide a handyman service, can skilfully complete a variety of odd jobs; small to modest scale tasks, home repair, and maintenance projects.
Fixing a Hole
When repairing a hole that's just too large for wall surfacing compound alone, but too small for the typical plaster patch, try filling the hole with an old newspaper before applying the surfacing compound.
Nailing a Small Nail
Sometimes you may need to nail a very small nail. The problem with this is how to hold it in your hands. What a handyman does is that he uses teeth of comb to hold the small nail.
Repairing a Table Drawer
There are times when the drawers of the dressing table or any other table do not run smoothly making it irritating to operate them. All you need to do to solve this problem is just apply some candle wax on the side where the runners are.
Making Loose Wall Screws Tight
To do it yourself you can use a wooden matchstick or toothpick. Before you screw these loose screws insert them in the wall plug.
Matching paint colour
Need to match paint colour in order to touch up a stained or damaged area of a wall? Take a small paint sample from the wall to a reliable paint merchant and let them match the colour for you.
Sand with the grain when hand sanding or using a belt sander. Scratches are hard to see when they run parallel to the grain. But even the lightest scratches across the grain are obvious, especially after staining.
The Length Measurements
As a rule, only clean, undistorted instruments guarantee correct measurement. If the measurement is just a few millimetres skew, this can cause a significant deviation.
Drilling without dust
You can stick a small open envelope directly underneath the hole you are drilling, in order to collect the drilling dust. You should also cover the floor underneath the hole.
How to remove paint from glass window
Remove paint specks and labels with a razor blade mounted in a holder. Always use a new blade to avoid scratching the glass. Wet the window first and push the blade across once. Rinse the blade and repeat on the next section to avoid trapping debris under the blade that could scratch the glass. Don't use a razor blade on tempered glass.
Paint Brush Storage
Simply wrap the brush or roller snugly in a plastic bag. Squeeze out air pockets and store away from light. The paint won't dry because air can't get to it. Simply unwrap the brush or roller the next day and continue with the job.
Fresh paint odours can be reduced by placing a small dish of white vinegar in the room.
How to remove masking tape
Even the best masking tape can be difficult to remove but scoring the dried paint between the tape and the wall will prevent tearing the paint off the wall. Use a small break-away razor blade to score the line.
